In News at Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH), the Global Health Media Project has been featured in an article entitled, “Alumna Hopes Video Will Help Stem the Cholera Tide.”

The story covers Deb Van Dyke’s background—a 1993 graduate of HSPH—and inspiration for using video to provide information for health workers around the world. Key messages presented in The Story of Cholera are discussed, along with our videos on newborn care, and some plans for future video topics.

Vermont Public Radio interviews Global Health Media Project

They discussed the inspiration for the Global Health Media Project, the need for videos to provide health care information for people in poor countries, and current projects on cholera and newborn care.

Vermont newspapers feature The Story of Cholera

Vermont media outlets are picking up the compelling work that is being accomplished by our Vermont-based non-profit. The successful completion of our animated film on cholera is garnering attention for both the disease itself and the tools that the Global Health Media Project is working on to combat its spread.

Today, the Burlington Free Press published the following story:

Although it may not show its face often in the United States, the deadly disease cholera is alive and well. The World Health Organization reports an estimated 3 million to 5 million cholera cases annually, resulting in 100,000 to 120,000 deaths worldwide. Cholera can kill quickly and spread easily.

The Global Health Media Project of Waitsfield has joined the fight against cholera. The company’s director, Deborah Van Dyke, collaborated with award-winning animator Yoni Goodman to produce the short film “The Story of Cholera.”

Cholera animation viewed in over 90 countries

The Story of Cholera, announced in our Business Wire press release three weeks ago, has been gaining traction among international viewers. The short animated film has now been watched in over 90 countries. Most viewers were from North America (40%), followed by Asia with 35%, and Europe with 20%.

The response so far has been very positive, particularly with regard to the clarity of key messages. Here’s one example:

Very well done. The animation has just enough information without too much technical data, so that the average person can comprehend the message. Additionally, the latrine information is invaluable for all cultures. Dr. Snow would be very proud! [Snow identified a public water pump as the source of the London cholera outbreak in the 1850’s, and was thus a pioneer in understanding how the disease is transmitted.]

The film, designed for a global audience, has already been requested for use in Haiti, Ghana, Cameroon, Zambia, Congo, and Thailand. We are currently working on narrating the film in multiple languages to make it more useful in cholera-affected regions around the world.
