Uganda study shows effectiveness of newborn videos

Our “Danger Signs in Newborns” video was used in a study in Eastern Uganda which clearly demonstrated the crucial contribution that videos can make in teaching mothers basic information about health care. The video was narrated in Lusoga for the more than 600 mothers who participated in this research. According to principal investigator Juliet N. Mutanda, there was a dramatic increase in the number of women who could identify danger signs in a newborn after video training, compared with a control group that did not use the video.

The study was conducted by Makerere University School of Public Health in Uganda with support from Grand Challenges Canada. The ongoing research is now examining the extent to which this improved knowledge carries through to changes in health-seeking practice.
