Self-Injection: A Game-Changer for Contraception
Self-injection of the contraceptive DMPA-SC is an evidence-based practice that is endorsed globally and approved in a growing number of countries, including the U.S. and several countries in Europe.
This self-injectable contraceptive gives women and girls the power to use contraception independently and discreetly over a longer period of time, enabling them to have more control over their own health.
Self-injection is a game-changer for contraceptive continuation because it eliminates the need for women to spend time and money to travel to clinics and wait in long lines to see a health care worker.
Among the five videos we’ve just released on contraceptive injectables for both health workers and women, one is a 2 ½ minute teaching aid that shows and tells the step-by-step process of self-injection. This handy video can be used as a job aid for health workers to show the process to women. Women can also keep a copy on their phones for whenever they need a reminder.
